What does it mean when someone mentions an herb is an “adaptogen” and what is the significance of adaptogen supplements? The short answer is they are nature's unique group of herbs that offer support and healing to our stress response. They “adapt” to the needs of the individual without disrupting any other biological functions. They stabilize the body’s response to stress and enhance its ability to cope with anxiety and fight fatigue – slowly and gently, without jolts or crashes.
It’s no surprise adaptogen supplements have gained such huge popularity in today’s stress-inducing pace. Whether you want to boost your mood, energy level, or ability to bounce back from prolonged stress, an adaptogenic herb is a valuable addition to everyone's cupboard.
Benefits of Adaptogen Supplements
Ideally, the body would only experience stress in limited duration – short spurts needed to deal with a stressful situation. The problem today is many people are dealing with chronic stress from hectic schedules or demanding careers. This prolonged, ongoing stress keeps the adrenal system going until it becomes depleted. This throws the body out of balance and wreaks havoc in the form of weight gain, fatigue, digestive issues, brain fog, and more.
Adaptogens help the body cope with stress by helping regulate hormones. Studies show adaptogens like Rhodiola rosea and Schisandra reduce the presence and effect of stress hormones, thus helping to resolve other issues that are caused by stress.
Three Most Popular Adaptogens:
Ashwagandha
There’s a reason why Ashwagandha has become one of the most well-known adaptogens – this powerful herb has been a staple of Ayurvedic medicine and herbalists for thousands of years. Several studies demonstrate how Ashwagandha helps reduce stress and anxiety by regulating cortisol production.
Ashwagandha is also a great herb for increasing stamina, which is extremely beneficial for those suffering from adrenal insufficiency and fatigue. When looking for a supplement, look for pure, organic ashwagandha without any additives or preservatives.
Holy Basil
Holy basil, or Tulsi, is considered a sacred plant in India and has been used in Ayurvedic medicine for millennia. Herbalists today use tulsi as a natural remedy for anxiety, adrenal fatigue, hypothyroidism, unbalanced blood sugar. In addition to helping with mental stresses, Research shows that Tulsi has the ability to protect against physical stresses, such as toxicant stress like pesticides, heavy metals, and other environmental toxins.
Rhodiola
Also known as the “golden root”, Rhodiola is a succulent that grows in cool, northern climates, and a popular stress-reducing adaptogen. Rhodiola is taken to improve moods, boost energy, and to help the body recover from stress-induced burnout. It is also a popular herb taken for weight loss due its fat metabolizing benefits.
Rhodiola is also part of the official Russian pharmacopoeia, used as an antidepressant and nerve tonic.

So thought it might interesting to keep you informed of how it goes….day one, here goes….
